The Unsorted Baggage

Jerry Colonna

Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast

Bruce Springsteen spent 25 years in psychoanalysis - and his insight about 'unsorted baggage' explains why your childhood patterns keep showing up in your parenting.

Jerry Colonna shares a powerful passage from Bruce Springsteen's autobiography.

'He talks about having spent 25 years in psychoanalysis. Let me just let that statement land. Bruce fucking Springsteen, 25 years in psychoanalysis.'

Springsteen writes about 'the unsorted baggage of our childhood.' Jerry's interpretation:

'We all have unsorted baggage, and at some point we're going to pay the price of not sorting that baggage. And the price more often than not is in tears.'

This isn't abstract. It shows up every day. The way your father's temper emerges when you're exhausted. The way your mother's anxiety appears when your kid takes risks. The patterns you swore you'd never repeat.

'If you continue to bypass sorting out your baggage, there's going to come a day where you're going to have to pay that price.'

The choice isn't whether to deal with it. The choice is when - and how much it costs.

Some amount of tears now, or far more tears later.
