The Coat of the Job

Ami Vora

Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast

Before accepting a job, put on the 'coat' of the role - imagine what you'd think about on your commute, who you'd have lunch with - and this is the same exercise you should do before committing to a new parenting approach.

Ami Vora makes career decisions emotionally, not analytically.

'I work through the spreadsheets and then tear it up because none of that stuff is actually going to determine how good I am at the job. I try to just put on the coat of the job. When I wake up in the morning, what would it be like? What would I think about on my commute? Who would I have lunch with? Do I like them?'

Before you commit to sleep training, Montessori, elimination communication, screen time limits - put on the coat.

What does tomorrow morning look like with this approach? Are you going to resent the 5am wakeup? Are you going to feel good about the boundary you're holding? Can you picture yourself doing this for six months?

'The thing that has led me to the places where I do my best work is a feeling of being at home. Can I walk through and feel like these people are going to have my back, they're going to let me take risks?'

If the coat doesn't fit, don't force it. Find the approach that feels like home.
