The Frog In The Pot
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
A VP of Growth describes realizing he was 'the frog boiling in the pot' - not noticing how bad things were getting because it happened slowly - which is exactly how sleep deprivation and parenting overwhelm creep up on you.
Andy Johns was a high performer at Facebook, Twitter, and Wealthfront. He had no idea how bad things had gotten.
'I was so focused on my work that I had slowly become the frog that was boiling in the pot. The typical analogy of you don't realize how bad things are getting because it's happening to you slowly until it happens quickly.'
This is parenting overwhelm.
One bad night becomes a bad week. One week of skipped workouts becomes a month. One month of no time for yourself becomes your life.
You don't notice because each day is only slightly worse than the day before.
'At some point, you may really get yourself into trouble and you might not survive. The vast majority of people who die on Mount Everest actually die on the way down, not on the way up. You don't save anything for the return home.'
The water is warming. Check the temperature.
