Your Path To Bangkok

Andy Johns

Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast

A Thai farmer told a burned-out tech leader: 'Everyone's trying to make it to Bangkok - the problem is they're following someone else's road' - which is why the parenting book that worked for your friend might be useless for you.

Andy Johns was volunteering at an animal sanctuary in Thailand when he met a farmer who radiated peace.

'He said, "Everyone's trying to make it to Bangkok. The problem is they're getting to Bangkok by following somebody else's road. The whole point is to find your own path to Bangkok."'

This is every parenting book, course, Instagram account, and well-meaning grandmother.

Their path worked for them. For their kid. In their context. With their resources.

'Given the immense heterogeneity of the human population - how we're all born unique and then made further unique through our individual life experiences - if somebody is going through their own struggles, at the end of the day, they have to find the philosophies, the tools, and the methods that work for them.'

Read the books. Try the approaches. But then trust what actually works for your specific kid.

Your path to Bangkok won't look like anyone else's. That's the whole point.
