Commit To The Phase You're In
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
A CPO describes her planning process: 'We can commit to a discovery effort, but we don't know yet if we're going to move forward - that's a body of work we can commit to' - which is exactly how to think about trying a new parenting approach.
Annie Pearl changed how Calendly makes commitments.
'We've gotten a lot better at making commitments around the work that's right in front of us versus making a commitment around a project six months out when we haven't even done enough discovery.'
Here's the parenting translation:
You read about a new sleep training method. You don't commit to: 'This is our sleep approach forever.'
You commit to: 'We're going to try this for one week and see what we learn.'
If that goes well, you commit to the next phase. If not, you've only lost a week.
'From there, if this is something we want to go after, we work on solutions, do user testing, land on a solution - that's another phase we can commit to.'
Phase 1: Learn about the approach. Phase 2: Try it for a week. Phase 3: Evaluate what worked. Phase 4: Commit or pivot.
Small commitments. Clear phases. Room to adapt.
You're not committing to the final answer. You're committing to the next experiment.
