Decision Science, Not Just Data Collection
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
You've noticed that screen time before bed makes sleep worse. You've noticed it many times. And yet somehow it's 7pm and they have the iPad.
Ben Williams renamed his data analysts 'decision scientists' - because data only matters if it drives decisions.
Parents are incredible data collectors. You've noticed the patterns. Sugar before dinner = meltdown. Skipped nap = chaos. Transitions without warning = nuclear. You have the data.
And then you do the thing anyway. Screen time at 7pm. Skipped the snack because you were running late. Sprung the departure on them without warning because you were distracted. The data was there. The decision wasn't.
'We wanted to apply a much deeper level of analysis on the data such that we could start to build in predictive models that could help us make better decisions.'
Observation without action is just... well, it's every parent at 7pm reaching for the iPad while thinking "I know this is a bad idea."
Close the loop. You already know what works. The hard part is doing it.

“We started off from a fundamental BI data analyst perspective, but over time we wanted to apply a much deeper level of analysis on the data such that we could start to build in predictive models that could help us make better decisions.”Ben Williams · 00:39:38
“It's cool that you call them decision science people versus data science, because that's so much more actionable.”Ben Williams · 00:40:23
