The 70% Rule
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
If 100% of what you believe today you still believe in 5 years, you probably haven't learned anything.
At the end of the interview, Chesky says something remarkable: 'I hope 70% of what I said I still believe, but if 100% of what I say, I still believe then I probably haven't learned very much. And so if 90% I say I don't believe anymore than I'm delusional and wrong. But I sincerely hope that I retract it or change or modify a few things I said today in a few years, because that will mean that I've gained more wisdom.'
This is a beautiful framing for parents. You're going to get some things wrong. In fact, you SHOULD get some things wrong. If you look back on your parenting from five years ago and you'd do everything exactly the same way, you haven't grown.
The goal isn't perfection. It's growth. The 70% rule gives you permission to learn, to evolve, to look back and cringe at some of your earlier decisions. That cringe isn't failure - it's evidence that you're better now than you were.
Hold your parenting beliefs with enough humility to update them.
