The Super Specific How
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
You've explained WHY hitting is bad. You've covered WHAT happened. But have you told them HOW - what exactly to do instead?
Wes Kao's breakthrough: 'Most writers spend too much time on the what and the why and not enough time on how.'
Parents make this mistake constantly.
We explain WHY hitting is bad. (It hurts people. It's not nice. We don't do that in our family.) We cover WHAT happened. (You hit your sister when she took your toy.)
But we skip HOW. What should they actually DO next time?
'When you feel like hitting, clench your fists, take three breaths, use your words to say STOP.' That's the super specific how.
'People really want to know how do I do this? How do I apply this to my own life?'
Your kid already knows hitting is bad. They don't need another lecture on the why. What they need is a specific, actionable instruction they can actually use when they're flooded with emotion.
Less why. More how. The how is where behavior actually changes.
