Freedom Without Data
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
Giving your kid independence without paying attention is not empowerment. It's abandonment with extra steps.
Hila Qu says something that applies way beyond product: "If you don't have a foundation of data and understanding of how to analyze those data, you are giving away a free product for nothing."
Translation for parents: if you're not paying attention to what your kid does with their freedom, you're not giving them independence - you're just not parenting.
You let them walk to school alone. Great! But did you notice if they actually went to school? You gave them screen time limits on the honor system. Cool. Are you tracking whether that's working?
The point isn't to hover. It's to have enough information to know if your approach is actually helping them grow, or if you're just hoping for the best while chaos unfolds offscreen.
Good parental "data" doesn't mean surveillance. It means: How are they sleeping? How's their mood? Are they talking to you? Are they excited about things? These are your signals.
Freedom plus observation equals independence. Freedom minus observation equals neglect dressed up as trust.
