Choose Your Suffering
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
Parenting is suffering. The question isn't whether you'll suffer - it's whether you'll suffer for something that matters.
Graham Weaver says something that sounds dark but is actually liberating: "Life is suffering. So figure out something worth suffering for."
You're going to be exhausted either way. You're going to have hard conversations either way. You're going to lose sleep either way.
The choice isn't between suffering and not suffering. It's between suffering for the hard work of connection, boundaries, and being present - or suffering through the anxiety of disconnection, the regret of letting things slide, and the background hum of knowing you're not showing up how you want to.
"I was getting on planes, I was working late hours," Graham says about his corporate job. "I'm doing that anyway. I'm just doing it for something I don't care about."
You're going to be tired at 8pm anyway. Tired from enforcing bedtime is the same tired as tired from giving up and letting chaos reign. One of them builds something. The other just delays the reckoning.
Choose your suffering wisely.
