Communication Isn't Talking
Inspired by on Lenny's Podcast
Communication isn't what you say. It's what your kid actually receives, understands, and remembers.
Gina Gotthilf opens with a truth bomb: "Communication is constantly underrated. And communication isn't about being able to convey a message, it's about being able to convey a message in a way that the listener receives it, and understands it, and remembers it. And that's really hard to do."
You can explain something perfectly to your kid. Crystal clear. Logically sound. Beautifully phrased.
But if they didn't receive it, didn't understand it, and won't remember it... you didn't communicate. You just talked.
This is why "I already told you!" is one of the most frustrating phrases in parenting. You DID tell them. They just didn't receive it the way you sent it.
The responsibility isn't on them to be better listeners. It's on you to be a better communicator - which means meeting them where they are, in a format they can absorb, at a moment when they're actually able to hear it.
Communication isn't broadcasting. It's landing.
